Avoiding a Home Moving Scam

JK Moving Services hates to see anyone get scammed. It could be a terrible situation for you—one that costs you unnecessary time, stress, and money. But it also reflects poorly on the rest of the moving industry. Even if you end up choosing another moving company over JK Moving Services, we want to make sure you end up with the right mover for you. Here are some tips on how to spot the bad movers quickly, so you can focus on the good companies.

  • Make sure all movers you meet are ProMovers certified by AMSA, the American Moving and Storage Association (or, the authority on residential moving). Also make sure the movers are registered with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and have a USDOT number.
  • Move away from the movers that refuse to come to your house to provide you with an in-home estimate. No one can give you an accurate estimate over the phone.
  • If you have time, take a tour of the company’s warehouse. How a moving company maintains their warehouse and trucks will speak volumes about the moving company itself. JK offers tours upon request by calling 703-260-4282.
  • Does the company look reputable? Sure, your mom always told you never to judge a book by its cover—but in this case, it’s ok. Is the truck branded with legitimate-looking company logos? Does the professional who shows up to your house look professional? Do they have a shirt with a logo on it? Usually your gut will tell you this answer. And JK Moving Services suggests you go with it.
  • Beware that the lowest price isn’t always the best price. Imagine finding out that there are all sorts of extra “hidden” fees once all your belongings have been loaded and padlocked into the moving truck? Avoid this situation at all costs. If an estimate looks too good to be true, it’s because it probably is too good to be true.
  • Check the company’s address. It sounds simple, but a quick internet search could save you a lot of hassle in the end. If a mover is REAL, then the company will have a REAL address. It’s always a good idea to check with the Better Business Bureau as well.
  • Buy extra valuation. A reputable mover will offer additional types of moving coverage to ensure you have the appropriate amount of protection in case any damage occurs to your valuables during your move.
  • Ask about the mover’s claims policy and their claims rates. If they’re low, chances are, you and all your worldly possessions are in good hands. Also ask about their claims process. Make sure the mover is on top of their claims. In the event that something valuable is damaged, you want to make sure that your claim is handled quickly and properly.
  • Ask for references. A good mover should be able to provide them on the spot.
