JK Recognized as One of the "Best Places to Work" in Washington Area
Local Moving and Storage Company Honored as Finalist In Washington Business Journal's Best Places to Work in Greater Washington Competition.
May 15, 2006—Gaithersburg, MD—For the past 24 years, the executives at JK Moving & Storage have attributed their astonishing success to the quality and dedication their hardworking staff. Last Friday, their employee base, nearly 500 strong, returned the favor.
Thanks, in part, to accolades from employees in every department, JK Moving & Storage was honored as a finalist in the Washington Business Journal's prestigious award for the Best Place To Work in the Large Company, Headquartered Locally Division. JK was recognized among a field of 15 competitors, which included several of the most prominent names in the Washington business community. Awards were also presented to companies in the Small Company, Medium-Sized Company and Large Company Headquartered Elsewhere Divisions. The announcement took place this past Friday morning, May 12 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Tysons Corner. The Washington Business Journal profiled the company's achievement their May 12-18 edition. JK operates out of two offices, their Sterling, VA headquarters and their Maryland location in Gaithersburg. What factor set JK Moving & Storage apart from the other companies?
"It's our commitment to our people," says JK's Vice President, International Division David Macpherson. "Company president Chuck Kuhn and executive vice president Steve Kuhn have always subscribed to the belief that if you take care of your people, your people will take care of your business...and nowhere is this more evident than right here at JK."
According to Macpherson, the philosophy begins with the most innovative training program in the industry. The company's 3,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art center at their Sterling, VA headquarters combines extensive classroom instruction with hands-on simulated moving exercises involving a model home, an office and a moving van, fully preparing JK employees for real-world encounters before they ever make their first customer visit. The program, spearheaded by JK's Director of Training Mike Blott, brings employees together to ensure that everyone at JK operates on the same page, quickly attaining an optimal level of experience. Certified specialists not only teach trainees how to accurately move belongings in and out of the home, but they also provide them with extensive instruction on how to properly treat each customer with whom they come in contact.
But there's more to the JK story than training. Through the implementation of a generous Profit Sharing Retirement Plan, Kuhn and his company have contributed more than $1.5 million in 2005 for participating employees. Assuming continuing contributions and a reasonable investment return, this unique employerfunded plan means an employee making $35,000 a year can retire a millionaire after 25 years of service.
